Video Shows Police Beating S. Fla Man, Charge Dropped. Prosecutors on Wednesday dropped misdemeanor charges against a 22-year-old man after reviewing surveillance video that showed police officers beating him inside a parking garage elevator. Joshua Daniel Ortiz, of Sunrise, suffered a broken nose in the Dec. 8 incident. Fort Lauderdale police had said Ortiz provoked officers as they attemp More..ted to break up a nearby disturbance. One officer wrote in his report that Ortiz "assumed a fighting stance." However, video from inside the elevator does not show Ortiz provoking police. Three officers can be seen punching and restraining Ortiz as they wrestle him down and drag him from the elevator. He was initially arrested and charged with felony battery on a law enforcement officer. Prosecutors later downgraded the felony to misdemeanor resisting or obstructing without violence.
