As the remnants of superstorm Sandy pushed northeast into the Canadian maritime provinces, millions of people along the U.S. eastern seaboard woke to scenes of extensive wind and flood damage. The North American death toll from the hurricane topped 30 by midday, including a Toronto woman who was struck and killed by blowing sign debris in the citys west end. Millions were without power- 7.4 million across the Eastern U.S.; tens of thousands in Ontario alone. Flights were cancelled, New Yorks subway was crippled and the clean-up began after a record-breaking storm surge sent a 14-foot (4.2 metres) thrust of water into Lower Manhattan. The storm was extensively filmed by amateur and professionals alike.
