Former NFL Star Gets Harassed By Cops For Taking A Walk

You’d think that Ricky Williams would only get stopped by admiring fans asking for autographs, but when the former NFL star was in Tyler, Texas for an event last week, he instead found himself getting the third degree from a local police officer.

According to Williams, he was in the small Texas town in order to attend the Earl Campbell Award banquet. The Heisman Trophy holder had arrived to his hotel too early, so he decided to go for a walk in the woods near his hotel.

That’s when he was stopped by police; dash cam footage from the cruiser shows the entire incident as it unfolded. The cop asks Williams to put his hands behind his back before frisking him to make sure that he is not carrying any weapons.

Eventually, Williams grows agitated. “Do you know how many times I’ve been messed with by cops just for being black?” he asks.

In its defense, the Tyler Police Department released a statement claiming that they only stopped Williams because a homeowner had reported an unidentified person walking around hear his fence. A separate construction worker claimed that he saw Williams snatch his tape measure, but Williams was only trying to give it back to him.

Now, Tyler Mayor Martin Heines has personally reached out to Williams to apologize for his treatment, going as far as to offer him the use of his personal guest room the next time he’s in Tyler.
