The mail box was overhanging the street. You can clearly see the sidewalk behind the mailbox and the kid was riding in the street too close to the curb.
I agree, before I became a responsible adult and had a son, this would have been funny; now I just feel bad for the boy because I pictured my own son experiencing that pain and it made me sad.
