High-Speed Police Chase Turns Into A Heroic Rescue Effort After Criminal Crashes

A man who attempted to flee from Minnesota police officers during a traffic stop ultimately needed to be rescued from his flaming vehicle after he ended the short high-speed chase by crashing his car in a ditch.

Dashcam footage shows two officers – one of whom had just graduated from the Minnesota State Patrol Academy and was on his very first shift – speaking to the driver of an SUV that was pulled over on the shoulder lane of Interstate 94 in Minneapolis.

Suddenly, the driver pulls away and starts barreling down the highway at 100 mph, and the two troopers run back to their cruiser and begin their pursuit. At one point, the fugitive appears to lose control of his vehicle and nearly crashes, but he quickly regains control and continues fleeing.

Less than thirty seconds later, the driver attempts to exit the highway only to fly off a steep embankment and roll multiple times before landing in the grass. The troopers sprint towards the vehicle and order the driver to exit the car when it suddenly bursts into flames.

That’s when the arrest turns into a rescue. “Can you get out?” one of the officers ask before the pair begins pulling the man out of the flaming vehicle.

The death-defying incident earned Troopers Scott Smith and Mike Lee a Meritorious Service Award – as well as a jail sentence that the perp certainly merited.
