Elon Musk has been making waves with his lofty plans for conquering space, but now, the genius inventor has unveiled an incredible new concept for a high-tech tunnel system that would see Musk become the king of the subterranean world as well.
During an appearance at the TED conference in Vancouver, Musk debuted a video showing off his plans for an underground transportation system that would transport passenger cars on electric “skates” at speeds of roughly 130 mph.
“You should be able to go from, say, Westwood to LAX in 5-6 minutes,” Musk said at the conference, a drive that currently takes 20 minutes when the stars align and there is no traffic.
While Musk admitted that the tunneling project has mostly been relegated to interns using roughly 2 to 3 percent of his company’s resources, his “Boring Company” has already begun digging a test trench just outside the SpaceX headquarters in Hawthorne.
The boring project began, fittingly enough, when Musk went on a frustrated Twitter rampage while sitting in LA’s infamous traffic. Now, he is actually envisioning a subterranean highway system comprised of dozens of tunnels that could revolutionize commuting in major urban centers.
