Netflix is set to host a new series called “Dear White People,” which will apparently expose all the numerous ways that the melanin-deprived among us fail at life. The move has sparked a widespread boycott on the part of Netflix subscribers who are no longer willing to fork over $10 per month to support this type of content.
The new series, which is based on the 2014 Justin Simien move of the same name that documented the plight of a black college student at a predominantly white university, will premiere its first season on April 28th.
Ahead of its release, Netflix aired this trailer that features a young black radio host dictating which Halloween costumes are appropriate, while a montage of white people in blackface is shown.
In a post on Facebook, Simien wrote that the backlash made him feel “strangely encouraged” because of the “sheer threat that people feel over a date announcement video featuring a woman of color (politely) asking not to be mocked.”
