In the U.S., only half of Sickle Cell patients survive past the age of 40. A bone marrow transplant can functionally cure the disease, even though the patient still carries the gene, but few people find a matching donor. And theres significant risk associated with the transplant itself. Research at the University of Louisville is changing that and already changing young lives.
