@USCoasty Why vent?: You both are wrong on this subject. The ladder crew is "venting" this building (cutting holes in the roof) because the engine crew is inside the house. Venting a house allows air to get to the fire; thus protecting the engine crews from somthing called a backdraft or a flashover. Venting can also be used to make a hole to shoot water through (to put the fire out) and to let firefighters see how fast the fire is spreading to other rooms and floors in the house.

@USCoasty US COasty: Are you a fireman or a firefighter? HFD are fireman thats why they vent.
