Italy’s Mount Etna on the island of Sicily, blew its top on March 5, 2013, releasing plumes of ash and lava into the sky. Another recent eruption in January 2013 occurred on Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula where 3 volcanoes are all erupting at the same time.
There are 16 volcanoes, referred to as the “Decade Volcanoes”, that are considered the largest and most destructive because of their history of massive eruptions and proximity to populated areas. Two of the volcanoes are in the United States: Mount Rainier in Washington and Mauna Loa in Hawaii.
