And according to the party’s founder and gubernatorial candidate, Jimmy McMillan, “There is nothing else to talk about.” But since McMillan’s recent appearance at the New York gubernatorial debate, the rent being “too damn high” is all people are talking about. Though McMillan, a retired postal worker from New York, dons the nickname “Papa Smurf,” he looks more like a hybrid of Hulk Hogan, Samuel L. Jackson, and former president William Howard Taft. He has quickly risen to political stardom for his off-the-wall catch phrases and unique stance on political issues. Jimmy McMillan’s appearance at the New York governor debate on October 18, 2010 has got the media buzzing and anyone watching the video will find themselves repeating his catchphrase, “The Rent Is Too Damn High!” Wearing a suit, black gloves, and a Santa-like mustache and beard, fast talking McMillan advocated for people whose rent is too damn high, a problem that is causing them to starve and be turned out into the streets.
