More Info About [Jeff Dunham]

Dunham’s act is defined by the personalities exhibited by his dummies. Dunham has stated in interviews that he uses his dummies to tell jokes that he could not tell himself, out of fear that they might offend audience members. Through the use of his dummies, Dunham is able to attribute any racism or other types of negative profiling to the characters he creates, thus ensuring that his act is considered satire and not hate speech.

Dunham’s dummies are typically based on some social or cultural stereotype, such as Jose Jalepeno on a Stick, a Latino jalapeno pepper who always appears to be sleepy, and Bubba J, an unintelligent, trailer-park dwelling redneck. Dunham uses these stereotypes primarily as a way to make fun of the particular social group he is stereotyping, but also to comment on the manner in which people perceive these stereotypes.

However, Dunham is not immune to criticism for taking advantage of these racial and cultural molds. He has been called racist, sexist, and Islamaphobic and has been criticized for relying so heavily on these themes to support his act.

Dunham had his own sketch comedy show on Comedy Central in 2009, but the show was canceled after the first season due to poor ratings and overwhelmingly negative critical feedback.
