Some of baseball’s greatest players are known for their ability to hit home runs. One of the most famous, Babe Ruth, had 714 career home runs before his death in 1948.

Another more recent big hitter is Barry Bonds. While his career was riddled with steroid allegations (and convictions), he finished with the all-time Major League Baseball home run record with 762.

In 1998, Sammy Sosa and Mark McGwire underwent a home run race in pursuit to beat Roger Maris’ home run record of 61 home runs in a season. They both managed to beat the record with McGwire becoming the new record holder with 70 long balls. In 2001, the record was once again in danger of falling. Barry Bonds broke the record when he hit his 73rd home run against Dodger pitcher Dennis Springer.
