Hockey Fights
Hockey fights present what is possibly the greatest, and definitely most entertaining, form of psychological regression in sport. Hockey fights are an atavistic jump backward: players who are playing an athletically beautiful and demanding sport say, “Screw it” and go right back to beating each other with their fists. If this sort of impulse is implicit in every sport, how come hockey is the only one that gets away with acting on it? There is no question that fans, of both the hardcore and casual varieties, love these fights and certainly want them to continue being part of the sport.
