HALF A-FREAKIN' BILLION VIEWS! That's how popular this music video by Korean rapper, Psy, is. Gangnam Style is Psy's goofy lampooning of the trendy lifestyle in the Gangnam area of Korea. Think of it as Beverly Hills mixed with Williamsburg Brooklyn. So hipster and haughty, you'd probably shoot yourself rather than live there.... Unless you had the cash to do it right, in which case you know you'd do it without a second thought.
Psy's video was astoundingly popular out of the gate, but for the first few weeks it really only resonated within Asian populations. It was, after all, just another K-Pop video from just another pop idol. It soon made the leap from niche to American mainstream, fueled, in part, by the goofy dance Psy does in the video. Think of it as a modern-day Macarena. It is a dance that little kids did for fun, young adults did ironically, and adults did awfully to embarrass their little kids who no longer saw the fun in it.
Once it went mainstream, there was no stopping the stream of parody videos that soon began to flood the web. Break tried to hold back the flood, but Gangnam Style managed to trickle into Break.com. How? Hot chicks (and a dancing GILF). Isn't that always the way? As soon as hot chicks got involved with Gangnam Style Break gave up the fight.
So where does that leave us now? Half a billion views for the original music video. Millions upon millions of views for all the parody videos that soon followed. There is no place in America that Psy hasn't been. We hear there was even a Psy sighting in L.A.'s skid row. He did the horse dance and ran, allegedly... according to a rumor... started by Break. Gangnam Style has finally showed signs of slowing, which is why we created this page. Bookmark it so that you can share it with your friends who still don't get it, and someday you'll come back to it to relive the memories of that crazy K-Pop summer of '12.
