Dunk Videos

The term “slam dunk” was coined by the legendary Chick Hearn, the venerable voice of the LA Lakers; he also coined a phrase about hardening butter and jiggling Jell-O that didn’t quite catch on as well. A slam dunk is achieved in basketball by any shot that a player forcefully powers down through the basket with one or both hands. For casual and hardcore fans alike, it’s one of the most satisfying plays in basketball.

Fun fact: dunking was actually illegal in NCAA basketball for a period during the late 60s and early 70s due to the huge advantage one player enjoyed by employing it on all the tiny defenders who tried to block him. That player’s name was Lew Alcindor, aka Kareem Abdul Jabbar, future Hall of Fame center for the Lakers. Dunking didn’t become a true art form until the late 70s, though, when the flashy, fast-paced style of the ABA was adopted by NBA players after their merger. Julius Erving, aka Dr. J, first popularized windmill dunks, paving the way for later greats such as Clyde Drexler, Dominque Dawkins, Michael Jordan, Shawn Kemp, Vince Carter, Dwight Howard and many, many more.

Here are some common dunks that you can use next time that you’re slamming on the eight-foot rims at your local elementary school:
  1. 360
  2. Reverse Jam
  3. Honey-dip
  4. Windmill
  5. Any combination of the above
