According to the Museum of Hoax the Top 3 April Fools’ Day pranks are:

1. 1957 Swiss Spaghetti Harvest- BBC news show Panorama announced that Swiss farmers were enjoying a plentiful spaghetti harvest. Along with this announcement was footage of Swiss peasants “harvesting” strands of spaghetti from trees. Viewers began calling BBC to find out how they could grow their own spaghetti tree.
2. 1985 Sidd Finch- Sports Illustrated published a story about a new rookie pitcher who was planning on playing for the Mets. According to the story he could throw a baseball at 168 mph with great accuracy. He had mastered the “art of pitching” at a Tibetan monastery. Met fans celebrated… unfortunately this player was imaginary.
1962 Instant Color TV- in 1962 there was only one channel in Sweden and it could only broadcast in black and white. No new equipment needed; all viewers had to do was pull a nylon stocking over their TV screen. Unbelievably, thousands of people feel for this.
