   The mother's would hide under a sheet and then be removed during the developing process to help keep the little ones calm and still for the photograph.

    these are dead babies fyi. It was usual to photograph dead people all dressed up back in 1800's. Really smooth break staff

   Most people were poor back in the day and the only could not afford to have pictures. Not this one but some of these where probably taken post mortem. They would usually have a pic taken because then because that would be the only one.
