  this does not take a genius. . .: if u look at a cloud in the sky, part of it is gray, part white, part somewhere in between. and thunderclouds are dark gray. why? shadows. now take a cloud and put it at ground level and make it a little thinner. what do we have? fog. and shadows...can be seen...on fog...

  .: i think thats smoke? but anyways i doubt the idea is that the tower is in the smoke.. my guess is that its inserted there to point out that the smoke/shadow or whatever looks like the tower..
