  The moon always appears to be bigger when it is close to the horizon. When it is close to the horizon it tricks your brain into thinking it is closer than it really is, but it is really the same size all the time. Pay attention next time you think " Wow! The moon is huge tonight!" I guarentee it will be really close to the horizon.

    @VagrantToadAnd you are completely wrong, when the moon is closer to the horizon it appears bigger not because it "tricks your brain", but because of the atmospheric refraction, the atmosphere has a normal index of refraction of about 1.3 and of course because of the diffusion of light through the nitrogen in our atmosphere it appears to be of a different color.
