Read (or at least read about) Common Sense, the pamphlet written by Thomas Paine and published in 1776. Considering population growth, it still holds the bestseller record in the U.S. It summed up all of the reasons that we had for telling The King to sit and spin, taxes and religious freedom included.

well to be completely fair yes the principal chain of events that led up to the revolutionary war dealt with taxation without representation, however, religious freedom was also something we were fighting for and considered won upon the winning the war. hence the first ammendment.
