  I had that: I woke up a couple of months ago and was going to brush my teeth and noticed my tongue was completely covered with black crap. Scrubbed my tongue for awhile and got most of it off. The wife looked on the internet and found out its call "Black Tongue." The night before I had an upset stomach and drank some Pepto then went to bed.   The guys below are right and wrong: First, it is NOT hair, but the condition is called "Hairy Tongue" or "Black Tongue. Its caused by either yeast or fungus that is promoted by artificial sunlight. Not harmful but pretty gross looking. But HotRod is right, smoking can promote such things.

  It is NOT hair: IT is a smokers toung and it happens that those HAIRs that you see there can get to be 2 inches long and hurt when you eat sometimes. Unortionetly smoking is adicting and people arent warned about this kind of ilness
