  The polar bear isn't asleep. Its sedated. Scientists shoot polar bears with tranquilizer guns from a helicopter and land next to it to test them. Polar bears are endangered so regular testing is necessary. The scientists go right up to the bears, armed with a pistol, just in case, and test them. It looks like testing equipment in the background if you look closely.
