Without limits on X and Y, you get more solutions than this plot shows. He hand picked the solutions to get it. And no, a piece-wise function is not necessary if you bound X and Y, to to picket the boundary function so that you only got this solution would be a piece of work. It would be a separate set of equations altogether.

@PhysicsMathManTried as well.. You can somewhat see it. There are some more answers for x and y that he must not have plotted.
