This is a transcript of The Wonderful World of Kentucky Derby Hats on Newsfeed...When I think of the Kentucky Derby, I picture lots of grabby old rich men, horses covered in roses and of course huge elaborate hats. This hat-wearing tradition started around 1875 when us Americans copied the UK dress code for the froofy derby called the Royal Escot. In fact, back then women were expected to always wear hats to special occasions. Not wearing a hat at a party was scandalous. “Oh my Gertrude! Look at Esther with no hat on!” is the 19th century equivalent of “What a skank!” I would have not fit in back then, I mean I can barely remember to put pants on…yep, and I forgot again.
