@Laphroiag free climbing is the act of climbing without the physical assistance of a rope for ascent. Solo (or free-solo) climbing is what you're thinking of.

Fck the poeple at the top, they new exactly what was to be expected on the route and did not warn this guy. instead they stood at the top until he almost died and threw him a rope and acted like they were doing him a favor. I climb and some times you come around a corner and have no idea what to expect, I know for a fact that no one with any climbing experience would ever intentionally go up a ice shoot with water under it.
@fedinthea Didn't collapse for the first party. Conditions could have been (and almost certainly were) different for the fellow climbing by the time he got up there. Also, climbing is one's own prerogative so he was excepting all the risks of climbing a wet flow. I've climbed plenty of ice with water running under it, but in this case it was eroding the top into just slush. It's all a judgment call of the current conditions. Maybe he started too late or just didn't expect it to be flowing that hard
