I was maintenance at a gas station/truck stop for a while. Our lines had a breakaway valve (separates at around ~300lbs) so only the fuel in the hose can leak out, and you won't pull the whole pump away with your car. It only took maybe 15 minutes to change a breakaway valve though I never had to. We rarely had this problem for the front gas/diesel pumps. But for the diesel line (semi trucks, mostly) it was so common we had special magnetic breakaways that you could click back together in 2 seconds.
