this was going down donner summit towards Sacramento around a 55 mph turn and the truck landed about 25 feet down the hill and blew out about 300 feet of guard rail crazy crazy

Ya you definately need to read the signs, know the road and keep in mind what your are hauling. I see so many rookie truckers try to downshift, going down a hill and miss a shift. Thats bad trouble in a non snycro transmission. Always select your lower gear before you go down. Use the jake and snub break. Been down some damn long grades myself, without any trouble even fully loaded. Just gotta use your noggin.

His smoked his brakes or fucked up and tried to downshift and missed a gear. He must of been top heavy as hell. My best guess is he missed a shift which turns off the engine brake then just glazed his brakes. Seen it before, and it gets ugly fast. Too bad they didn't have any runaway ramps, they do save lives.

first off what a fuckin bitch that didnt stop for the guy.. second. it wasnt a brake failure. when youre haulin 10 grand behind you brakes are pretty much worthless. its called keepin it in a low gear

    • Fr8hauler

      Fr8hauler - 3 years ago

@youreshort07If you're only "haulin 10 grand behind you" you're just about empty. He is fully loaded at around 46,000 pounds of cargo plus a 34,000 pound empty weight. Couldn't tell if driver couldn't stop fast enough or just wanted to get past it before CHP shut the road down, but he clearly pulled off on the shoulder at the end.

      mountainman22 - 3 years ago

@youreshort07he was fully loaded and he died he was a rookie they shut down the road for a good 4 hours and then had one lane road

A truck of that size has considerable momentum at that speed, not to mention a high centre of gravity. The truck tried to carry on in a straight line due to its inertia, but the wheels were turning with the curved road, so centripetal force created by the friction between the vulcanised rubber polymer of the wheels and the crude petroleum asphalt road caused the wheels to maintain their path of travel around the road, but the momentum on the centre of gravity caused it to tilt towards the straight line pat

Finally someone got it right! Way to go Shotzy! All this talk about brakes failing... The root cause is he/she didn't downshift. Brakes on ANY semitruck aren't going to help going down the mountain.

    • LaughingGuy

      LaughingGuy - 3 years ago

@video_charmerThe root cause was he was travelling too fast. Speed is the factor here coming too fast into that curve was the problem. BTW this looks pretty flat for a mountain. Had he paid attention to his speed he wouldn't have flipped the truck. Obviously no matter how much brakes you have or how you try to downshift doesn;t matter once you are inside that curve.

@video_charmerTrue comment. I have a license to drive trucks here in germany and that was about the first thing we learned. Brakes will overheat quick and then your doomed. Thats why you shift down or use othere systems to break.

    • video_charmer

      video_charmer - 3 years ago

@video_charmerLaughin guy - The opening title says "downgrade" and "Donner Pass". BTW the the horizon in general looks pretty flat -- thus you'd say the world isn't round either. I bet he was watching his speed -- it was going UP and he didn't even have his foot on the gas. It's called a run-a-way.
