  it's all in the cutting of the wedge i think. take chunks out the thing then on the other side break it a bit and timber all over the joint.

   You can't expect a tree to always fall the direction the wedge cut is aiming. You have to look at the tree to see where is most of the weight. He should have seen that major branch and realized which way it was it wanted to fall.
