this is called ground resonance. it happens when you hit the ground and the ground shocks the helicopter and sends the rotors out of phase. because of being out of phase the out of balance rotor system shakes itself apart.

certainly a test: Like said before there aren't any landing gear. And also that big dirt burm around it might have been to catch flying debris.

@newguy07break dosen't...: ..realize how much useless speculating it could prevent by doing the littlest bit of research for it's clips. this is a stress test for a chanook, nothing more, nothing less.

d:none of the above.: It appears that this is most certainly a test aircraft only, as it doesn't even have landing gear installed, but has some kind of support mount instead. Although the 47 did fall victim to ground resonance, it does not appear that was the intented purpose for the testing (fore-mentioned web page verifies this). The fact that it was secured to the ground in the matter it was seems to be asking for a resonance problem though. Before a helicopter starts up you want to remove all tie do

Dad flew em: around for a while here (RAAF, Australia) He said all the time the differentials went and was not a good time to be in it. I can see it is obviously a test of some sort, maybe that? Cool to watch!

check this out: Here's the web site with info about this particular video (and the side view video as well). FYI the helicopter fell victim to ground resonance while tied down for ballistic evaluation. Go to: http://www.chinook-helicopter.com/history/aircraft/D_Models/84-24156/84-24156.html

correction: This clip is not of a helicopter trying to take off. It is of a ground test of a scale model of a Chinook. That doesn't change the fact that noone thought before tieing it down or how funny it is.

w: but you are still wrong the hellfire is a anti-tank weapon.also the CH-47 can be equiped with a chaff and flare despenser.which an Apache can't

wrong: "Who started this shit huh?! Who posted a comment complaining over me using the term "throttle" when I just wanted to make other ppl understand what I meant??!! I'll tell you who! YOU!!! Why don't you just go home to your whore of a mother and fuck yourself! Don't come here yapping about who is defeated!! BTW: Chinook sucks! It's a transport-helicopter after all, and is the most vounerable aircraft in the world. Stinger, hellfire, etc. can easily shoot it down! And with pilots like you, it gets even

Helicopter: No one forgot to remove the chains. This was a test conducted at an Army test facility. The helicopter was a CH-47 Chinnok that was rigged with servos much like an RC model airplane. One of the rotor components failed causing the rear pylon to break apart. This helicopter was put together from old parts and not intended for flights. The final test would been to shoot a 50 cal. machine gun while running at ground idle. It all has to do with improving against ballistics in order to protect t

Helicopter Tie Down: Ok here's the deal....I am in a helo unit in the Army and I work on the same type chopper....they were doing "resonance" testting. Resonance is the extremem turbulence experienced by a helicopter when it is hovering close to the ground, like when it is preparing to do a slingload- or carry something slung underneath it

Not ground res. test: This was a test by the US Army two yrs ago. The ground resonance testing has been done decades ago and does not need to be done again. This was to test another system for vibration effect on the airframe. The manufacture told the army not to do it this test with it tied down this way because of ground resonance. The Colonel’s pride got in the way and they lost a very expensive piece of equipment. No one was hurt, except the Colonel’s job and pride. There was no one aboard (it wa
