This is a three-year, thirteen mile journey of the Mars rover, captured in photographs by the rover. Add a couple McDonald's restaurants, and it wouldn't look much different from traveling through the midwest.

    so many comments bitching about not having colour photos and a few trying to explain why. it's a long way to send data back. BW = less data, plus more kit needed for colour and weight is an issue to get there in the 1st place. at least we have pictures. colour images are made from results of IR imaging. colour is a luxury but not a necessity.

    While this is amazing to see pictures from Mars, they could have done far better with the video. I am a rank amateur using Final cut Express and I could have done far better. But so could almost anyone else. Do these people simply not care about these things?

    Rover's cameras are RAD-hardened. Also, comparing their cameras with even professional HD cameras is like comparing your super-mega-pixel point and shoot with Hasselblad camera. Each picture that rover takes is black&white. To get color picture rover takes three pictures through different filters and these are combined to form approximate real-color image. BTW, all these millions spent on this mission stayed in USA. There's no single dollar bill in that rover. So we didn't actually sent xx million dollars i

    remember when that piece of shit got stuck on a couple of rocks? all the pictures look the same because in the 13 yeas 12y 10m of the time it was stuck in one spot, on a couple of fucken rocks.

    The photos are black and white because they have to be transmitted back to earth, and to take color photos would greatly increase the amount of data that needs to be sent. In this case color photos are a luxury not a necessity.
