A group of soldiers find a location they suspect has an IED. They use a bomb defusing robot to neutrailize it but end up setting off the IED completely destroying the robot. Glad everyone was ok, however, sucks that they probably could of accomplished the same task with some well tossed rocks.

    Chances are...: the robot didn't set it off, the insurgent who was watching over the site did remotely. Anyway, this is one of the best uses of military funding there is. That robot's destruction either saved the life of one soldier who would've defused the bomb manually, or an entire HMMWV full of soldiers who would've been hit by it.

     Tossing rocks wouldn't help. There was likely an enemy observer in the distance with the detonator switch, hoping to push it when our boys were within it's lethal circle. When he saw the robot, he figured there would be less evidence if the button were hit. KaBOOM! We won that battle!

    no, dumbasses: They do not cost $400k. Early prototypes of this packbot were over $150k. Now that they mass-produce them, these articulated ones are about $100k (and not intended to get blown up, they are meant for observation). The little wheeled BomBots with infrared cameras, night vision and sensors that ARE meant to go boom are less than $5k. No matter the cost, better bots than boys, anyday.

    Waste of money: Imho.I think we should let 5th graders make class projects. Robots that detonate bombs. We should film all of them and let each and every child know that he or she has helped in the war against terrorism. Also, not a good idea to be so close, and to hell with throwing rocks. Ever hear of a daisy-chain? There could have been a whole sting of them on the roadway, blowing everything to SMITHERINZES!

    These machines stand up to the explosion better than you would think.: Most of the expensive stuff is in the base. It surrounded by solid steel and very low.They can be repaired and back in action relatively quick.
