Straight from Wikipedia: "The appearance of a blank cartridge can give a false sense of safety. Although blank cartridges do not contain a bullet, precautions are still required because fatalities and severe injuries have resulted on occasions when blank cartridges have been fired at very close ranges."

Blanks can NOT kill you from that range. Fact.

Blank rounds people. Possibly the air being discharged from the gun blew his hat off. Not a bullet. Thats why he's not freaking out

I just want to know what country this army is from? Because whatever they are from hopefully they're not our allies. We dont need allies that stupid. Why would you have a 2 deep firing line even if they are firing blanks?

and they're manually racking the action on the gun. you dont need to do that with live fire ammunition. thats only something you do with blanks or lower powder amounts, like subsonics.

@pballskatelaxActually, you would have to. If the weapon slide is in the forward position, and you inserted a magazine, you would have to cycle the weapon to put a round in the chamber. In theory the weapon is in Condition 4 with the slide forward. If you insert a loaded magazine, the weapon would be in Condition 3. Therefore, you would have to cycle the weapon to put a round in the chamber. Upon firing, the weapon would automatically put a round in the chamber. For ceremonial purposes, there are 2 things that I have see

really break? those are all blanks. look at their rifles when they all fire. 0 recoil. even a very small caliber would show recoil when holding a rifle one handed in the air. the gases exiting the barrel from the blank blew his beret off, not a bullet. modern organized armies never fire bullets into the air for ceremonies or events anyways. thats a huge safety issue. great job break.

Monkey is right, they fire blanks for salutes like that. The hot expanding gas knocked his cap off. If it were live ammo they would not need to hand cycle the action to get the next round to feed. Think about it, if they used live ammo in a large city all those bullets would be falling all over the city, never be allowed to happen.

@FiftyShooterWhen fired in the air, rounds do not come back down to earth like you would see in a cartoon or whatnot. The round actually basically dissenergrates in the air. I'm not saying small fragments of metal are not coming back down, but it's been proven that those small pieces of metal do not travel fast enough to pierce skin or even cause serious pain. At most you would feel something like a bug bite, or a pinch if the round was not carried by wind (which it would be) or land in a tree or whatnot. The bullet wou

That was not a live round, blanks for this kind of weapon can kill at these distances, though.
