  You can actually survive for over 12 hours when you are buried by snow, assuming you can create a big enough air pocket for yourself and have thermally insulated clothing. And if you have enough room and stones to fashion a small firepit, and enough dry brush, and a fire starting device. And a portable refrigerator with beer. And a generator to run it.   In case of an accident like this you should NEVER try to remove the persons helmet. They could have neck or spinal injuries and in the process of removing a helmet you could inadvertently paralyze or kill the person. The proper thing to do here was make sure he could breathe/was conscious, then determine the state of injury. Same goes DOUBLE for motorcycle crashes. The persons helmet could be holding their skull together. NEVER EVER remove a helmet.
