   some guy pulled off this same trick at the lanes by my house, only he was using his brand new ball and when it came down it landed on the edge of the lane and cracked his ball in half

  probably was doing this on purpose: he's using one of the pink 6 pound alley balls, no other reason a big guy would be using such a light ball.
