Why are they so upset with the driver?: The spectators were stood in the classic bad place to stand. It's not like there aren't a fat pile of warning signs. "Motorsport can be dangerous." If you attend a rally, ask a marshal for a safe place to stand card.

I'd love to be a spectator at a rally race.: It isn't as dangerous as it seems. You can stand in places that are not life threatening.
