Now I get it that the trick was to come close to the ground and fly back up but I highly doubt the pilot meant to get this close.

I'm pretty entertained with the argument on aircraft type here. I was going to get in on it with my own opinion, which was a late model Mk24 Supermarine Spitfire. However, after about 10 seconds of google research, I realized that the canopy is too far forward for a Spitfire. It is in fact a Yak-9d. Not a P-51. The fueselage is wrong, as is the ENTIRE empenage (look it up if you don't know) vertical AND horizontal, and the wing as well. If you know anything at all about circa WWII aircraft, Mustang di

lots of stunt pilots know EXACTLY how much room they need to pull this maneuver, how far some will go is a different story. this one is particularly dangerous as the height needed can be affected by wind, atmospheric pressure and other simple but dangerous things :D it feels nice to know something about a video for once lol

  • thewhitemale

    thewhitemale - 3 years ago

well it has to be a yak of some kind.. just look at the tail. The P-51 tail is much more pointed and has a flat top, even back to the early P-51B's. Im almost 100% positive its a Yak 3. HerrMurf, it really couldnt be a Yak 9D.. the aircraft's nose in the video is pointing out in front of the leading edge of the wing farther than it would on the 9D model.

Not all P-51s had the belly scoop, I think only the D's had em. And that is deffinately a Merlin, so P-51 I think?

      thewhitemale - 3 years ago

Definitely a P51.........NOT: It's a Yak 9D ya toolbox - the tail is wrong and the radiator config is wrong. It's a Russian WWII fighter plane. Listen to the PA during the pass - he even says it a Yak - rebuilt and flying as an FAA experimental!

I used to be a piolet, Defenetly a P-51 Mustang.: The North American Aviation P-51 Mustang was an American long-range single-seat fighter aircraft that entered service with Allied air forces in the middle years of World War II. The P-51 became one of the conflict's most successful and recognizable aircraft.

    • Syralkilla

      Syralkilla - 3 years ago

@ilblackfireand you: copied n pasted "The North American Aviation P-51 Mustang was an American long-range single-seat fighter aircraft that entered service with Allied air forces in the middle years of World War II. The P-51 became one of the conflict's most successful and recognizable aircraft.". You know how I know? Because you can't spell 'pilot' or 'definitely' yet you can type an entire paragraph with perfect punctuation and spelling.

@tyloreProbably a yak: I'm pretty sure the airshow announcer did his home work and meant yak after he said it twice in this clip.

      Syralkilla - 3 years ago

@tylore5 point star?: You mean the Russian Red Star by any chance? YAK ITS A YAK STOP SAYING P51!!!

    • haloguy628

      haloguy628 - 3 years ago

@tyloretylore you are the moron: ganu29 already identified the round vertical stabilizer, now look at the wing tips. They are also round. P51 had sqarish wing tips whereas Jak-9 had round. So before you call somebody a moron I suggest scouring the tubes for some pictures and descriptions on said topic. That way you won't put your head up your ass and make yourself a moron.

Video information: I took the video and am disappointed to see it uploaded without my permission, but I will confirm some things about what you are seeing. The aircraft is a Yakolev Yak-9, and while it appears it is a real close call to the ground, I have been told there is a ditch of sorts where the plane bottoms out of the maneuver, so in actuality, he probably cleared the grass by about ten feet. It was taken at Andrews AFB in 2004.

@davis719sure it wasnt a yak?: the commentator was talking about the yakolev factory. maybe its related?

    • Atv821

      Atv821 - 4 years ago

@davis719well,: although I could see where you were coming from with the Yakolev idea, Im pretty sure you can see the air-scoop under the aircraft indicating that it is a P-51 Mustang, manufactured by North American.

    • usmctanker1

      usmctanker1 - 4 years ago

@davis719NOT a P-51: its a YAK-9 profile totally different from P-52, tail, wing tips (rounded, not square) cockpit, (frame, not bubble) etc.. know what your talking about before you post, not every allied aircraft with a scoop underneath is a P-51
