The exponential growth also works inversely for the width of the paper. Each time you fold it in half you lose half the width of the paper. If you started with a big piece of newspaper (like the video suggested) that was say 50cm wide, after 10 folds, the paper would be 0.05cm wide. After 20 folds, it would be 0.000048cm wide. After 30 folds, 0.000000047cm wide. Once you've folded it 33 times, its width would be less than an atom.

only possible theoretically as in reality a paper - independant of size - can never be folded more than 7 times.
epochdeus - 11 months ago
@globaltravella not true, the mythbusters were able the fold a piece of paper 11 times, although it did rip on the 10th fold. However, if you were to attach alot of rolls of toilet paper end to end and start folding it, I'd imagine you could get far more than even 11.

Folding does not create more mass...
Just making a flat piece of paper into a really long and very thin string.......

this is ridiculous.. yes its true, but the mass would break in on itself. for one it wouldn't be visible to the naked eye!.. you can apply the same physics to anything.. if I took a lenth of string and could stretch it until its mass prevented it from being seem by the naked eye, I could make it any lenth I wish!., stop using maths in a ludicrous way to make people think you look smart yeh idiot!..
@Artizan76 Numbnuts, the point of the lesson was about exponential growth, not the feasability of actually folding the paper 25 - 45 times.
@ that's why it's pointless you arse!.. no ones arsed about exponential growth. at least a numbnuts who finds radical ideas interesting..

hippie94 - a year ago
Well, if you have seen mythbusters you would know that it's barely possible to fold a piece of paper in half more than 7 times before the thickness becomes too great to bend. Duh!
@hippie94 You might wanna watch it again. 11 times.
cyle - a year ago
False. Once the height of the paper surpasses its with...technically, folding the paper in half would then mean you are folding it by its length, not its width. In order for this to actually work, the sheet of paper would have to be wider than the earth's circumference.
Luvguf - a year ago
@cyle "IF you could fold a piece of paper over and over..." It's great you have the knowledge. But if you don't listen to the question correctly, you look like a jackass.
