I can tell you that this probably happened because of improper watering of the lawn. Frequent shallow waterings create a shallow root system, not only for the grass but also anything else in the lawn. Less frequent deeper waterings promote deeper roots that are not only more drought tolerant but less likely to have this happen. Not that anyone here cares.
