This is an awesome demonstration of a technique you can use in your daily lives, whenever you need to mold a metal wire into a specific shape, bend it, then remold it to the original shape.

They should make cars of this material. Have an accident? No problem - pour some water on it and presto! insta-repair.

This type of metal is called a shape memory alloy, this one is probably a nickel-titanium wire (which you can buy cheaply online). If you've ever had braces the wire that goes in your mouth is also a shape memory alloy, it just uses a different property of these materials called superelasticity to stretch more than normal metals and pull your teeth together.

Its real. Certain types of metal have this ability, though most are extremely expensive. To my knowledge they are not used in cars, though the science that was used to blend these alloys is being used to create more ding resistant metals for cars.

Considering this says "grand illusions" at the end, I really wonder if this is real. I hate to be one of the douche bags that cry foul every interesting video (see mrslacker), but the end title may give this one away. For a possible explanation of this illusion see dach123's comment

It's the exact same wire that they use to straighten your teeth with braces. And they already use it for some models of cars. Doors/hood/trunk + anything usually prone to getting dented.

@Itachi69 No it doesn't work on stanks. it works on stents.

This is called "nitanol". Its a 50/50 nickle/titanium alloy that is often used in the medical industry for stents (the stent is inserted into the arteries in a small crumpled shape and heat is applied to expand the stent). You don't even need water.. all that is required is a temperature change

@RamboGambit It's the bonding of the two metals that cause the particular outer-electron shell to 'remember' its shape
