Magnesium Explosion

Video Details

Uploaded Dec. 1, 2006 by

A small MPEG camera on the engine films fires kinda like COPS. This was a stolen pick-up truck that someone dumped and set fire to. Watch when water hits under the steering column and a magnesium explosion occurs.

Mechanical Engineer Here:: Magnesium is not used to produce engine blocks or any other moving part in an automobile. It is used in some foreign vehicles for braces, supports, or even coating on bolts for corrosion resistance. Although it is an ideal material for engine block production for energy retention, nobody uses it for obvious reasons. If anyone needs an explanation as to why magnesium would be used in something that contains, um, FIRE, then please direct yourself to the nearest high school chem

@powerstruggle7Actually, I'm an engineer too. Magnesium is used for anything from connecting rods to engine blocks. The original Volkswagon Beetles had blocks made of magnesium. The rims on my car are cast magnesium - light but stiff. You're probably one of those dumb ASME pricks. Get a life and join SAE.

fire: is a living thing. It does not like being put out, and it fought back.

@Throttle13Magnisum: Magnesium is found in a lot of imported cars. It is used in engine blocks and a lot of wheel because of its light weight. Once a car is on fier and the magnisum is heated to enough temperature to burn adding water will increase the burning intensity of the magnisum. Some times to the degree of what you just saw. I am a 25 yr fireman and have seen this several times. Need to becareful with all of the new devices that are being put in carstoday. Bumpers and air bags can also be a killer.

Airbag Pellet?: Perhaps the sodium azide pellet from the airbag? The water might have created a short that ignited the pellet, which would decompose to sodium metal and nitrogen. Normally the sodium metal is contained within the bag and is neutralized by Potassium and Silicon Oxides. But if the bag was burned away, that could be the sodium metal reacting with the water.

firefighter here: the spectra (light emitted) by the explosion sure did resembled that of magnesium, though i'm sure other types reactions produce UHF light as well, just like the chemist said. We have a magnesium cutting torch on our truck that burns the exact same color. In situations like that, even though your adrenaline is running, you're so physically and mentally focused on maintaining control of the line that when an explosion engulfs you like that-- you really just cant move fast enough.... for

Chemist here: Alright there is no way in hell that there is unreacted Mg in that truck and has not already went up. There was plenty of heat there to ignite Mg. Also, Mg does not react violently with water. It is a alkaline earth metal. Alkali metals will go up like that with water (Na, K) but like the Mg they would have too already ignited. So I dont know what it was but it was not Mg

@sonnyacea very: small charge of magnesium, and something else.. keeps it from burning at its nominal temp, but keeps it bright

You can take the magnesium: out of a lighter, wrap it in the spring, hold it over a flame and when it gets glows red throw it at the ground. Same effect. Pretty cool!

    • milessy

      milessy - 2 years ago

@Wicked_Jokezyour knowledge of chemsitry: is obviously less creditable than a starving African who hasn't attended school in his life. Magnesium can only ever burn with a white light. technically its not a colour because its light emission is out of our visible spectrum, however it appears to us as white. Its due to the electron arrangement in it's electron orbitals and the promotion to the higher energy levels when supplied with enough energy. if what u burnt emited a red light, my guess is you're proabably burning ca

Good ol' mag: It's always fun when you roll up on a vehicle fire, hit it,start putting a knock on the fire and dump 150 gpm(gallons per min.) on magnesium from 4 ft away when you're not expecting it. Vw and Jeep are famous for it. However if you're wearing the proper equip. you don't have to flinch because all it's gonna do is temporarily blind you.
