What's demonstrated here is an evolutionary principal. Although no one sees the rope, the cost of falsely assuming there is no rope is high - car damage or falling off the bike. The cost of incorrectly assuming there is a rope is negligible.

Yeah, every time I see kids doing this where I live... I speed up as fast as I can. If they really are holding a rope - it'll hurt like hell for them. Sometimes when I'm speeding up I stick my head out the window and yell "DIE!!!"
