Its not the only way...the other way is to build it in dry dock, then fill the chamber up with water when its completed. This is simply the old school badass way.

Does that work every time? Looks like it probably shouldn't and that there would be a better way. Do they do that with the really huge ones also?

@JosephDorweiler No. The really huge ones they build in warm and fuzzy hangars and lift them in anti-gravitational field to place them gently to the water.
