  AA batteries?: Ughhh no your wrong. Its a lithium battery that holds and builds the current in a transistor to power the flash.

    @r0nin89You have no clue what you're talking about...: AA batteries work. A transistor does not store current. Its VOLTAGE that builds up in a large capacitor that when fully charged, will release the high voltage to power the flash. Transistors are used as "switches" to re-direct power (pushing the button to release the voltage to the flash).
