This is bad. A U.S. Helicopter doesnt negotiate the speed of an aircraft carrier and lands short of the runway falling into the ocean. Hopefully, some of you know more to this story and will post it.

This was in Dec of 99 aboard the USS Pecos. I was training with Force Recon on how to conduct a VBSS mission taking off from the USS Bonhomme Richard. We were to fast rope in and practice retaking the ship. I was in the second helo out of three. 6 Marines and 1 Corpsman died that day. The rest were pulled from the water by the Navy SEALs that were in the smaller boats in the water. The Bonhomme Richard is the same ship you will see in "Act Of Valor".

I met one of the guys who was on this helicopter. He now runs an athletic training group called "The Program." They came to my highschool to do drills with our lacrosse team. This was a practice on taking over a ship.

Ch-46 crash: The way I understand what happened is the r/r wheel caught on the guard netting aroud the edge of the aircraft, the pilot was waived off, and when he began to lift off it caught and went off to the side. Anyone who has gone through training, will know that it is not easy to escape from a submurged helicopter.

@jarhead22you're correct: he attempted to "wave off" but didn't realize that his main-mount wheel was caught in the netting. When he added power, it created a pivot point around the caught wheel and accelerated a rolling motion...it's called "Dynamic Rollover". In fact, it is *because* he added power that he flipped over....then again, like I said, he was not aware that his wheel was caught in the cable netting.

Crash?: Um.... ok, now I am losing faith in Break.com. You were much better and more accurate when you didn't get this canned shit from Ebaums or wherever you're getting it. Now your descriptions don't even match the videos. Way to go.

Aircraft carrier one: Pilot error maybe but those type have a reputation that has for many yrs been covered over, maybe due to its usefulness,a number of pilots have faced the blame yet those that have lived through many incidents have a lot to say about this aircrafts mysterious faults

Helecopter crashing on Airfield: The helecopter crashing on the airfield, not the Aircraft carrier one, doent look like pilot error to me,he would have to be 100% crap pilot to lose it in that way after hes already touched down once.I wonder if he had tail rotor prob or elec malfunc. in the controls

Why are the videos all messed up?: Not a US helicopter, at least in the video Im seeing. It looks like an old Sikorsky from the russian military. (there seems to be two different videos). The second one is the one with the twin copter.

U.S. helicopter crash: This is a CH-46 Marine helicopter that crashed off the coast of California in Dec of 1999. I can not remember how many Marines died, but a few did not make it. Crash was pilot error.

You were told wrong.: My Naval History class talked about this and other disasters. All 5 crew members died as a result of the crash. Only the crew chief (the one hanging out the window) made it into the water before this thing sank like a rock to the bottom. He would later die of internal injuries suffered in the crash. I would like to thank you though for posting this version and not the one that some idiot coined music too.
