A pilot comes in for a landing at a hospital and it appears like he decided to just turn off the engine 30 feet above ground and just drop on his landing mark.

it was defiantly power settling or otherwise called vortex ring state.

  • Pootabas

    Pootabas - 3 years ago

its called settling with power. He came in way to steep and fast and got caught up in his own rotor downwash, he also might have had a tailwind which could cause it to develop faster.

autorotation: looks like he lost his engine at some point and tried to get it down in time. at least they are alive. any landing you can walk away from is (kind of) a good one

@247ventb4dg3r171you are correct.: I read the report on this a while back.

@247ventb4dg3r171LOL, for an emergency, airplanes have the "two tree landing".... that helicopter needed five trees.

    • mangemang

      mangemang - 2 years ago

@247ventb4dg3r171What, one for each MRB and one for the TR..? With the FIVE trees I mean.. And I don't believe it was an Autorotation but rather, as stated above, a "settling with power"..

Jet Danger or Agusta 109?: i saw skids but was kinda grainy......anybody know?

@md83mxAgusta 109: This was the first landing at the new McKay Dee Hospital in Ogden Utah. My good friend was the flight nurse on board. It was media day, and they were flying from the old hospital to the new one. She survived, so did the pilot who had a pneuothorax (punctured lung). LifeFlight uses Agusta 109 for the altitude and speed. Amazing they lived through it.

well: atleast its nothing that ducktape cant fix, and for people that keep saying it was engine failure, stfu, its called "Settling with power"

Vortex ring state: Who ever said it was VRS was correct, yes he had forward momentum but look which way the dust blows after he crashes.....yep folks thats a tail wind which means that he was flying INTO his down wash...bad JUJU

autorotation: it appears that this por pilot may have been forced into an un-powered auto rotation. bearing into account the limited ruder control ( rear tail rotor rotation) and angle the helecopter is sitting in the air it appears that he may have tried to force positive pitch to early and not aggresivly enough therefore losing rotor head speed forcing the hard landing you can see here i would say that is not a vorted ring as he has tomuch forward drive to be caught in one of thoes.

    • flaxmereboy

      flaxmereboy - 4 years ago

@flaxmereboywhat is autorotaton: Autorotation is the phenomenon which results in the rotation of and lift generation by a rotorcraft's primary rotor through purely aerodynamic forces, under certain conditions. Autorotation is employed in the normal operation of an autogyro as the primary lifting mechanism, whereas it is used in helicopters only in an emergency mode after failure of the helicopter's powerplant or transmission. to assure that autorotation can be usefully employed, and skilled changes to the collective a

Settling with power or he entered vortex ring state..: so many stupid comments here... dont try to explain shit you dont know.

    • demko_inc

      demko_inc - 4 years ago

@ireaperwtf: he either lost engine power or had a tail rotor loss...if he had a tair rotor loss he woulda had to keep his forward airspeed to minimize not havin a tair rotor here it looks like he was tryin to do so while tryin to slow down enough for a safe landing

@ireaperajl: you dont need a tail rotor above 30 knots...the vertical stablizer in the back is what keeps it going straight

    • DuckCFII

      DuckCFII - 4 years ago

@ireaperTail rotor failure: Actually it depends on the helicopter w the vertical stabilizer....the R-22 requires 70 knots to stay somewhat straight and if that had been the case he'd have flown to an Airport and Auto'd to a much longer and wider runway
