If you can put a cigarette out in gasoline then how could it even be possible for a cell phone to get gas to high enough temperatures that it would reach IGNITION POINT (temp needed for gas to actually ignite) and then actually ignite? It's not.. it's impossible.

it doesn't look like it but he could have been wearing nylon pants...the material rubbing together can create a spark and then yea...he's fuked.

Its not the phone, If's been proven so many times..

      tendonut - 3 years ago

@gonaceMythbusters tried everything they could to get a cell phone to light the gasoline. They even put a cell phone in a air-tight glass room and filled it with gas fumes to the point where there was condensation on the glass...still wouldn't ignite. It's just an old wives tale, just like cell phones on an airplane.

NOT POSSIBLE !: It has been proven time and time and time and time again that a cellphone WILL NOT ignite gas fumes in that situation....

    • tiny1877

      tiny1877 - 3 years ago

@KTW5380That's not entirely true...: Most modern cell phones are rated as intrinsically safe. If the guy had an older phone that isn't, it definitely could have ignited the fumes. I would bet more that it was built-up static electricity in his clothing, though.

    • ncopas

      ncopas - 3 years ago

@KTW5380ugghh: damn, why do people just believe things w/o knowing what they're talking about? KTW is correct, a cell phone cannot start a fire. Not even older ones. There has never been one documented case of a cell phone causing a fire. That's because it's impossible. The only way you could is if you were using much higher amplitude waves, like in a microwave.

@KTW5380my bet: is that he used a lighter to check the fuel level in the truck. wut a fr00b

    • ONUblackrose

      ONUblackrose - 2 years ago

@KTW5380ncopas is obviously an idiot. the amplitude of a wave is determined by the source. he must have meant frequency... you can change the amplitude of a wave as much as you want but it's still going to be the same basic wave as long as the frequency is not altered.

Aren't: you supposed to ground the vehicle before attempting refueling operations? As soon as air force refuelers get out of the truck the first thing they do is attach a ground line to the flightline. Static electricity could have ignited the fumes.

myth cont.: phone and answering it...he is infact grabbing something out of his pocket and than puts it into the manhole cover that he opened up. He may have possibly been trying to see how much gas he had inside the tanker. See there is no way of knowing that besides knowing what he loaded at the terminal. But he may have seeing how much was in there so he knew how much he can drop there at that station. He grabs something out of his pocket and puts it inside the hole...than if you notice ...he back off.

@ne14a69bcso...: you watched mythbusters also? big deal, we will never know the true whole story unless that guy tells it. Break is always inserting crap that can't be known into their stupid descriptions... nothing new...

cell phone a myth: ok first...the myth about cell phones at the pump is just that....a myth....i do have to agree with the comments that this guy is a jack ass for a few reasons....number 1 he cant drive...i am in the industry of fuel delivery...i can get a full size 9000 gallon tanker tractor trailer into any gas station. The fact that he cant even drive this thing is let alone handle the falmable load he is hauling. But back to the cell phone thing, watch this video a few times and you will see that he i

like fuel pumps, there are saftey valves in place to prevent an huge explosion.: those only happen when the tankers internal containers (chambers) are compromised and are directly exposed to fire/spark etc.....If not that camera, building or anthing within about 1000' wouldnt be there...

    • FAHQ4iners

      FAHQ4iners - 2 years ago

@lowzone1Bullshizzz: An empty gas truck with just vapors, would cause a hell of a lot more damage than a full tanker... Gas doesn't explode, it fuels fire, vapors explode

  • GIJosh2687

Hehe: That was good. The nylon clothes or the possibility he didn't ground himself before getting up there is most likely the case. POL, I would know.
