Fire Causes Major Backdraft

This is an amazing video of a group of firefighters attempting to put out a building fire when an incredible backdraft occurs pushing them all down. Thankfully nobody was seriously injured in this accident. It's not really fair to these firefighters, as the movie Backdraft made the whole profession a lot more glamorous and life affirming than the deadly explosions involved in real backdraft situations would imply.

Backdraft: this is a classic backdraft. I am a firefighter, but fortunately have not suffered one of these myself. You can tell its a backdraft because of the way the fire is "breathing", the smoke appearing and disappearing. The fire doesn't have enough oxygen to burn, but is smoldering, heating up to a few thousand degrees. It forces the smoke out then sucks it back in as it tries to get oxygen. Then someone has opened a door or broken a window and kaboom - to use the technical term. Those firefighters

@firemansam08really: a classic backdraft. its good thing you said something or just the title would have given it away.

@firemansam08Well: I say thanks for the info. I was wondering how it happens. Now I know. Just wish that star logo from those 'The More You Know!' things would fly over my head :(

@firemansam08Sorry firemansam: ericmalcolm is a bit of a dickweed and he believes all the titles he reads on this site. Your explanation was very helpful. His smart-ass response was simply the best he could do.

@firemansam08so if they would have noticed the "breathing" you speak of, they would have been able to see not to open a door and/or window and avoided this backdraft?

I'm no expert: but thick black smoke means low temperature, you can see at .44 how flames start to come out of the building then the massive explosion happens

this is no backdraft people.: it's a pyrotechnical phenomenon called 'Sudden Vacuum Release Condition'. a backdraft only occurs with a smouldering fire - not the case here. for SVRC you need a strong blaze, suppressed with smoke. if you introduce water into that then you destabilize it, causing the explosion as seen here.

@hogbertothis is some nice vid: and u are boring it with ur scientific explanation no one wants to know about

    • uggy4ever

      uggy4ever - 3 years ago

@hogbertoI liked the "boring" scientfic explanation: I bet the firefighters would have liked to know about this phenomenon before they started hosing it down so close

@hogbertoactually i made it up: good, eh?

    • DrMembrane

      DrMembrane - 3 years ago

@hogbertojust so you know: vapor never increased a fire, only oxygen does, smoldering is what you say is not, plus a supressed blaze is a contradiction isn't it? so your fake explanation is actually silly

@hogbertoI forgot to add: you need to study more thermodynamics and fluid dynamics because you're such an amateur

....: that is without a doubt a backdraft flashover is when all the contents in a room reach theyre burn temp causing everything in the room to catch fire

ummmm: This a BackDraft: This was a working fire but there was not enough Air getting to it thus not allowing it to properly develop. The firefighters either broke a window or something similar which caused this massive influx of air that accelerated the process. A flashover IS similar but it is normally a heat induced situation and there is no active fire as it were and the quick introduction of fresh air triggers it. Just my Opinion as I was not there SEE HOW SMART I SOUND! BOOM

    • wastedrubber

      wastedrubber - 3 years ago

@je0lllll0epjudging by how much smoke was billowing out: it's pretty safe to assume no door was just opened or window broke. so you don't sound very smart at all.
