Duck Vs Jet Engine

Sad duck crashes into a Jet engine. This is a cool demonstration on what happens to Jet Engines when a single duck is flown much like the bird strike that caused the Hudson River plane crash last month.

This was the Rolls-Royce blade toss test. The colored blade was designed to fall off to test the ability of the case to hold debris during a failure. No ducks involved in this one.

They have found a way to put some kind of filter over it, but then it causes the air rushing in to not go in right, and it don't let enough air in. I watched a thing about it on discovery or TLC or one of them channels. That would be nuts if a bird took down air force one.

There probably isnt much you can put over then engine that wouldnt get sucked in.

That was a blade off test, not a bird ingestion test. And it's no demonstration, it's for certification.

This look suspiciously like the a380 engine blade testing. No one would deliberately say "fire" to shoot a duck into an engine.

they should put a filter (a cage looking thing) infront of the turbine so nothing bigger then a soda can should be able to get in

@Shady_Cavemansmall birds are the size of a soda can...and could still damage a turbine blade enough to cause failure.

Fan Blade separation containment test. Part of new Engine certification requirements. Trust me birds dont do that! Im an Aircraft mechanic and birds are ingested all the time! They also get struck by lightning with little damage done! Just remember big flock of birds bad! Few Ok!

build a freakin to cover the engines so crap doesnt "fly" inside of it!

    • LOLATURFACE

      LOLATURFACE - 2 years ago

@woostveenyeah? then hows air supposed to get into it? And dont say mesh screen because that wouldn't hold up to the airspeeds that planes fly at.

    • Rabel

      Rabel - 2 years ago

@woostveenLolaturface, How about a titanium mesh cover that comes out to a point, so that it is stronger. Your an idiot if you think they cant do it. It has to do with money, just like the old pintos, it costs less to pay lawsuits then to take care of the problem.

Scary, makes you not want to fly again. Its so easy for that to happen.

I´ve seen these kind of testing before. Did you noticed the color blade of the propeler? The test consists in releasing that color blade in full pawer to see if the engine cover holds it so the blade won´t cut the plane fuselage... I can tell you that is not likely that a duck could damege an engine like this but it can happen

This is bs. how are we supposed to know what a bird does to a jet engine if there's no fn bird being thrown into this thing??? last time I checked birds are not the same as small explosions going off when they hit shit or rockets as we like to call them. the only way to really test this is to toss a couple of birds into the testing room and wait till one gets curious and flies into the jet.

yeah thats bs, all jet engines have to pass a test where they fire 3 frozen chickens at them and they cant lose more then 3% of there power.

      Coryjw101 - 3 years ago

@sbbqYeah, you're right, and that's the only test jet engines ever have to go through. This went around my dad's engine shop and test cell WHERE THESE ARE DONE to huge laughter.

Total crap. The yellow thing is a fan blade that explodes to see how well the engine holds up. Break must have hired James Frey as their research guy.

    • durigr

      durigr - 3 years ago

@Coryjw101More precisely they test if the engine body can contain the unbalanced fan under hight speed rotation and therefore prevent the blades to tear away and cut throug wings and fuselage... which would be a disaster compared to losing one engine...
