@tossyActually, as long as he doesn't touch anything in the mouth, the alligator won't do anything! It's because an alligators eye's are on each side of it's head, making it not so great in depth perception. So the alligator must rely on it's sense of touch to know if it can clamp down on anything. What caused the alligator to close it's jaws during the performance is most likely a drop of sweat falling onto it's tongue.
